The 5 Must-Have Cloud Computing Characteristics

Many people and organizations are very familiar nowadays with the use of cloud computing services without knowing cloud computing basics or cloud computing architecture. However, IT Managers and decision makers must understand the following properties of cloud computingbecause of its importance in business applications and customer satisfaction.

Cloud computing is a model for enabling ubiquitous, convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications, and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction.

Cloud Computing Characteristics

Here are five characteristics of cloud computing you should know:

Broad Network Access

Cloud computing services may be accessed from anywhere with internet connection and virtually on all platforms.Users can connect to the cloud service using their mobile phones or tablets on the go, or work from home on their laptops, and at the office using their own workstations.

Private cloud services are generally accessible from anywhere within the company. Additional security restrictions such as a virtual firewall may be added to limit what services may be accessed from where and by who. A VPN (Virtual Private Network) connection may also be offered between on-premise resources and an isolated set of servers in a public cloud (virtual private cloud).

Resource Pooling

Your cloud provider computing resources are pooled to serve multiple consumers using a multi-tenant model. Dynamic physical and virtual resources are utilized to serve various customers at once, and they do not need to know the exact location of the provided resources. However, they may be able to specify location at a higher level of abstraction (e.g., country, state, or data center). Examples of resources include storage, processing, memory, and network bandwidth.

The main advantage of cloud services comes from resource pooling and overbooking. As most applications and services do not operate at peak capacity most of or at the same time, cloud providers can dynamically allocate resources for their customers. Most customers are not aware of this as they still receive the same level of service. Some of them may request a dedicated service, though at a premium.

Rapid Elasticity

With resource pooling comes rapid and scalable elasticity. This makes the cloud appear unlimited to the customers and they can upgrade at any time easily. When a web application gets an unusual amount of traffic, more servers may be created to provide that service. Thus, the application can still run smoothly as resources are automatically scaled with current demand. Scalability also allows cost-effectively running workloads that need a very high number of servers but only for short periods of time or occasionally.

Cloud Computing Characteristics

Measured Service

Everything in a cloud system is automatically controlled and optimized. Resource usage can be monitored, controlled, and reported, providing transparency for both the provider and consumer of the utilized service.

Cloud services generally charge users per hour of resource usage or based on other options such as the number of transactions, amount of storage in use, and the amount of data transferred. Some cloud providers also charge a flat rate based on the number of active users. Many small and medium sized businesses like that fixed pricing model.

No matter how you are charged these measurements are also used by the cloud service provider to determine the best allocation of its physical computing resources to all of its customers. This is performed in order to best satisfy its own SLA (Service Level Agreement) commitments and minimize servicing costs and maximizing margins and competitiveness.
