How prepared is Cloud Computing to respond to the needs not only of businesses, but also of educational institutions and small enterprises? With everything that is happening technology-wise, there is a growing sentiment that the underlying focus to ensure Cloud Computing success should be on data.

Cloud providers seem to be showing the immense importance of data, but it should not only be the providers that understand this reality, but all stakeholders. The measurement of Cloud Computing success for every IT organization should not be whether or not they use the technology, but how they use the technology to driver their data needs. The state of the data can give an accurate representation on whether a company that is in the Cloud or attempts to move into the Cloud will achieve substantial success. Let us take a look at the key capabilities that every organization should be able to do to be considered a success with Cloud Computing.

Moving Data

One of the determining factors to success for any organization is its ability to be able to seamlessly move its data between its on-premise systems and the Cloud. What does this actually mean? Basically, an organization that is capable of staging, preparing, transporting, securing, and governing its data across both physical and Cloud networks can achieve considerable success.

The organizations that can master this strategic technological advantage will be able to successfully integrate its data. This capability is becoming more available and prevalent with public Cloud systems. Part of the measure of success is the capability to store data with the end purpose of not only reading it but also analyzing the data when it is needed.

Analyze Data

It is not unheard of for organizations to have huge amounts of data in the Cloud but have no efficient methods to access it. More importantly, they do not have the means to analyze it so that it becomes more valuable for their organization. In this context, we cannot consider such an organization to be successfully using Cloud technology.

The more important focus is to have the capability to embed the analytics directly into the business-centric processes of the organization. One of the emerging options that organizations can take advantage of in understanding their data in the Cloud is machine learning.

Machine Learning

What is machine learning? Machine learning is an often use phrase that was actually initially coined during the 1950s. This in reality is a subset of Artificial Intelligence (AI), which has become synonymous to machine intelligence, which allows programs to feed on the available data through the recognition of patterns within the source data and to learn from it.

This means that machine learning is able to draw interpretations or create predictions without necessarily being programmed to do so. Many of the advances in technology have to do with rubric of machine learning. In fact, old machine learning algorithms are finding new lease on life with the abundance of practical applications that have been molded to help it learn from the abundance of data available.

Management of Data

The management of Cloud data in this context is with respect to the ability to use a layer of abstraction on it. The abstraction layer will be able to remove any complexities that come with the data. But in order to get to this type of abstraction, there is a need to put data governance, data performance monitoring, data security, and database management in place. All of these have to be managed from a single pane of glass that allows access to solid tools.

The harsh reality of Cloud Computing is that many organizations are failing to achieve success because they do not manage their data well. Harsh as it may sound, but the ability to be able to manage, access, and exploit your Cloud stored data is the true measure of achieving success with Cloud Computing.
